What to Expect at Your Cake Smash Session in Arkansas

So You’re Interested in a Cake Smash Photoshoot…You want the best results possible, right?
We all want those adorable, smiley photos of your baby at their cake smash session, but it takes a little bit of work and preparation to achieve it.
As a photographer, I understand the importance of capturing those precious moments and creating lasting memories for you to enjoy for years and years.
Below you can find valuable information to ensure a successful and enjoyable cake smash session at my Russellville photography studio or on-location within 100 miles for both your family and your little one.

When to Book

To make the most out of your cake smash session, we recommend booking one to two months before your baby’s actual birthday or birthday party. Booking in advance gives us plenty of time to plan, design, purchase, and create your cake smash decorations and props. If you plan to use the images for party invitations or at their party (which I highly recommend), booking in advance ensures you have them ready to send out & display. Turnaround time for your images is 1-2 weeks after your final selections have been made.

The Perfect Outfit

When it comes to outfits, most of my clients find their cake smash attire at online platforms like Etsy or Amazon. However, the choice is entirely up to you. You are welcome to bring two to three outfits – one to two for before the cake and one for the smashing portion. Alternatively, you can opt for a topless smash. If needed, we can provide a simple onesie. Don’t forget to bring a clean outfit for your baby to go home in!

Session Duration

A full cake smash session typically lasts for an hour. During this time, we will capture some adorable pictures of your baby before introducing the cake with props. Once the cake is introduced, your little one can enjoy the smashing part. After they enjoy their cake, we will bring in a milk bath tub for some fun splashing and cleaning up, resulting in unforgettable pictures.

Important Considerations

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable session, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Timing: It’s best to schedule the session after your baby’s morning nap and make sure they are well-fed. A full baby is a happy baby.
2. Leftover Cake: If the cake is not completely destroyed, you may have the opportunity to take some home. Yummy!
3. Baby’s Preferences: Not every baby likes cake or being messy. It’s important to be flexible and understanding. Rest assured, we will still capture great photos even if your baby isn’t interested in the cake.
4. Snacks and Drinks: Bringing small snacks like puffs or cheerios can be helpful if your baby doesn’t like the cake. Additionally, don’t forget to bring water and/or a bottle to keep your little one hydrated.
5. Comfort Items: Feel free to bring toys or anything that will make your baby smile and feel more comfortable. We may also ask parents to play a song or video on their phone that the baby enjoys if they need a little extra encouragement.
6. Cake Selection: As some babies may have allergies or aversions to certain ingredients, we ask our clients to provide the cake. We recommend doing a practice round at home with a cupcake to gauge your baby’s reaction. It’s best to order the cake at least two weeks in advance and choose a vanilla flavor with white or light colored icing, as it photographs the best.
7. Baby’s Well-being: If your baby is teething or not feeling well, a dose of infant Tylenol before the session can help things go more smoothly.
